HOW DOES ONE GET PROMOTIONAL CODES?
Please call 800-599-5177 or email registration@menshealthurbanathlon.com to obtain Promotional Codes.

Please Note: All Promotional Codes must be entered at time of registration. Promotional Codes not entered at time of registration shall not be valid or redeemable, including for credit, adjustment, refund or otherwise. All Promotional Codes are subject to change without notice. Only one (1) Promotional Code per person per registration. If you used a Promotional Code during registration, when picking up your race packet you MUST present valid ID (see below) based on the Promotional Code used. Anyone unable to produce a valid form of ID for the applicable Promotional Code may be disqualified from the URBANATHLON™ or required to pay Rodale Inc. the value of the applicable Promotional Code discount.

  • Military Promotional Code requires a Military ID
  • Student Promotional Code requires a Student ID
  • Equinox Promotional Code requires an Equinox Membership Card

WHAT IS THE REFUND POLICY?
Entries are non-refundable and non-transferable.

WHY ARE IPODS/PORTABLE MEDIA DEVICES PROHIBITED THIS YEAR?
iPods/portable media devices are strictly prohibited because of the unique urban makeup of this event. The obstacles involve jumping, crawling and climbing and thus lend themselves to headphone cord snags and dropped devices that result in back-ups and run-ins. This rule has been set to protect all involved parties from injury.

Please Note: Race staff will be aggressively enforcing this rule on race day.

WHAT IS THE TOTAL DISTANCE OF THE COURSE?
9.75 miles, including obstacles.

WHAT TIME DOES THE RACE START?
Wave One will begin at 7:45AM sharp, with each successive wave following according to the wave start plan.

HOW OLD DO I HAVE TO BE TO RACE?
All racers must be 18 years of age or older to participate in this event.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT DIVISION I'M IN?
The division breakouts are as follows:

IF WE ARE IN DIFFERENT AGE GROUPS, CAN WE RUN TOGETHER?
Different age groups will likely be separated by the wave start plan. Racers hoping to run with someone should plan to meet up at Hydration Station 1.

HOW DOES THE WAVE START WORK?
Racers must start with their assigned wave. Racers who do not start as part of their assigned wave will not be given a finish time and will not be listed in the results.

Staging for race start will begin 30 minutes prior to start. Racers need to look for their assigned wave's staging sign within the start area and line up first-come, first-served.

With the exception of Wave One, all waves will be based on age, gender and the total number of people registered for each. Final details will be available in the weeks leading up to the event.

Please Note: Timing Headquarters keeps the official time clock for the competition. The race clock is real time; it begins when a racer crosses the timing mats at the start and stops when they cross the finish line.

HOW DOES "WAVE ONE" WORK?
Wave One is open only to the first 300 racers who have posted an acceptable "qualifying" time in a previous URBANATHLON™ event. Sign-up is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Wave One is optional for all athletes who qualify, but NOT required. Should a racer choose, he/she may forgo their qualifying time and run with their age group.

If you qualify and choose to compete in this wave:

  • You will be identified by a separate bib color
  • You will have a fully enclosed staging area, separate from the general field
  • You will be the first wave to depart from the start
  • You will NOT be included or ranked within your age group
  • You will be eligible for Wave One specific awards
  • You will be eligible for overall race awards

WHAT CONSTITUTES A TEAM?
Relay teams consist of 3 team members; each member runs approximately one-third of the race.

CAN 2 PEOPLE RUN THE RELAY?
No. All relay teams must consist of 3 team members.

IF WE REGISTER AS A TEAM, CAN WE ALL COMPLETE IN THE ENTIRE RACE?
No. Racers who have completed their race leg are not permitted to finish the race, nor are they permitted to assist other relay team members in any way while they are participating in the event. Racers interested in running the full race should register as a solo.

CAN A TEAM MEMBER BE REPLACED?
Technically, no. For extenuating circumstances, call 800-599-5177 or email registration@menshealthurbanathlon.com to speak with a race representative.

DO ALL RELAY TEAM MEMBERS NEED TO BE PRESENT FOR PACKET PICKUP?
No. One team member may pick up all three packets. However, they MUST have copies of all non-present team members' driver's licenses. Additionally, if a Promotional Code was used, the picking-up party MUST also have a copy of the appropriate Promotional Code ID (see "How does one get Promotional Codes?" for details).

IF I AM RUNNING SOLO, CAN SOMEONE PICK UP MY PACKET FOR ME?
Yes. A third party can pick up your packet for you. However, they MUST have a copy of your driver's license. Additionally, if a Promotional Code was used, the picking-up party MUST also have a copy of the appropriate Promotional Code ID (see "How does one get Promotional Codes?" for details).

WILL THERE BE PACKET PICKUP ON THE MORNING OF THE RACE?
There will be NO packet pickup on the morning of the race. Racers who cannot pick up their packet on the designated days may arrange for a third party to pick up their packet for them (see "If I am running solo, can someone pick up my packet for me?" for details).

WHAT WILL MY RACER PACKET CONTAIN?
Packets will contain:

  • A timing chip
  • Race number and pins
  • Information on wave start, Gear Drop and transportation
  • An official Men's Health URBANATHLON™ competitor T-shirt

AM I REQUIRED TO RETURN MY TIMING CHIP AFTER THE EVENT?
No. Timing chips are disposable and should be thrown away after the event.

WILL THERE BE ANY PLACE TO LEAVE MY STUFF?
Gear Drop stations will be available on-site the day of the event. All information regarding Gear Drop will be enclosed in racer packets.

WILL THERE BE TRANSPORTATION AVAILABLE FOR THE SECOND OR THIRD RELAY LEG?
Leg 2 starts just over one mile from the main event site and, as a result, no transportation will be provided. Specific directions will be available in the weeks leading up to the event.

Bus transportation will be available for Leg 3 of the relay. Buses will depart from the main event site, Upper Hutchinson Field. Final details will be available in the weeks leading up to the event.

ARE THERE OTHER RACE LOCATIONS PLANNED FOR 2010?
This year, the URBANATHLON™ will be held in Chicago only. We are looking to bring the race to other cities in the future.
