Sports lover Travis Ricks learned at age 17 that a rare tumor growing in his right knee would require total knee replacement and 12 months of chemotherapy. Four years after the surgery and chemo, aggressive staph infections brought on 16 additional knee surgeries and two years in the hospital. Travis then learned that only two options remained: allow doctors to fuse his knee (and never compete in sports again), or let them amputate (and re-enter the world of sports). Travis chose to compete.
Since his amputation in 2003, Travis has been active in running, snowboarding, surfing, rock climbing and triathlons. His ultimate athletic quest: compete in the inaugural ParaTriathlon event at the 2016 Paralympics. Travis gives back to the community by mentoring other amputees - especially kids who have lost limbs due to cancer.
